I attended the Stratford Rural Urban dinner last week and listened to Farmer Tim talk about bad days and good days on the farm. Friday was one of those bad days but not hard to forget them when you have the next generation helping out.

Worth watching this deep dive from PBS NewsHour about the California Forever project happening in Solano County. The development of a full scale city was achieved by having an LLC purchase thousands of acres in the area using money from billionaires including Marc Andreesen, John Doerr, Laurene Powell Jobs and others.https://lnkd.in/gGXnY2D3The vision of future development co-opts urban planning language around density and walkability. Residents of Solano County are well aware of the pressures the development company faces in trying to create returns as well as the prospect of real estate development in this agricultural area.Ambition towards a healthier living environment is welcome in urban planning and real estate development, but what are the tradeoffs? To what extent does the community need to be involved? How might future urban planners and real estate developers build trust with people in their communities? #housing #housingaffordability #urbanplanning #realestatedevelopment #realestatefinance

Farmers are the lifeblood of our rural communities. That’s why we Bromsgrove Lib Dems’, Droitwich & Evesham Lib Dems’, Redditch Lib Dems’, West Worcestershire Lib Dems’, Worcester Lib Dems’ & Wyre Forest Lib Dems’have a clear plan to support them. We’d back British farmers with a £1bn boost to undo years of failed rural policies and Conservative neglect.#BritishFarmers#RescuePlan #LibDems https://lnkd.in/eVekKrV8

Deforestation Free Communities Campaigns Officer at Size of Wales / Maint Cymru

Exciting things are happening in Monmouthshire. As part of a project delivered by Size of Wales I Maint Cymru, funded by Co-op Foundation, we recently took a group of students to present their views on tropical deforestation to Monmouthshire County Council. The children, formerly of Osbaston School had been invited by Mary Ann Brocklesby, council leader. The children asked for Monmouthshire County Council to become the first 'deforestation free county council' in the UK. The children offered their full support 'in partnership', to achieve this 'one school meal at a time'.And they meant it.....The children came prepared with a school meal their friends back at school had prepared with The Cook Along Clwb. The children had re-shaped the school korma, using deforestation free ingredients - UK based sources of protein, of their own choosing. The meal met the price points, nutritional guidelines, could be delivered at scale and would drive new business to UK farms. Every child involved in the making of the new korma (all 70 of them) voted hands down in favour of this modified deforestation free option. I've no doubt, in part, because they owned it. The response from the chamber was a standing ovation, the first of its kind, for what was described as one of the 'best inputs' seen. The children unified the Council on this.Paul Matthews said "That was stunning. It's truly staggering to achieve cross party consensus, I think you've given us our very own Earth Shot, to be the first deforestation free county potentially in the world.....if we believe you, if we can learn from you, we should accept this challenge".So much to be inspired by: - a courageous council meeting one of the most urgent challenges that this planet faces - a council 'culture' that sees it's community as #citizens with whom it works WITH not for- the children, future citizens, have been part of the solution process. A defining moment here in Monmouthshire and an exiting road ahead. Incredibly proud to watch these children do this. So when I asked these children less than a year ago, if they ever thought they could change the world? I think their county council just gave them their answer. Imagine the kind of impact this has on a young person? Thankyou to every one that has helped on this journey.Lee Waters MS Delyth Jewell Peter Fox OBE Mary Ann Brocklesby Paul Matthews Barbara Davies Quy Jon Alexander Andy Middleton Ben Taylor-Davies Monmouth Regional Chamber of Commerce Monmouth Town Council Tom Kirton Monmouthshire County Council Polly Keane Andy Galloway Angharad Underwood Size of Wales I Maint Cymru Ben Price Castell Howell Foods Ltd Edward Morgan Hugo Hutchison Simon Dorman Osbaston School RAGLAN PRIMARY SCHOOL Undy Primary Monmouthshire Kymin View Primary You can listen back to the hour session here
