Don’t miss any of the Sardine Festival 2024 action on the KZN South Coast!

The Sardine Run is an unmissable annual marine spectacle that can be enjoyed during the cooler months on the KZN South Coast. This year, the Greatest Shoal on Earth will be accompanied by a variety of Sardine Run Festival activities taking place across the KZN South Coast over the next few months – with some calendar regular that aren’t to be missed!

“The Sardine Run is one of our tourism calendar highlights so it’s fitting that our many tourism establishments will be maximising the experience for visitors with some top-class events,” explained Deborah Ludick Acting CEO of South Coast Tourism & Investment Enterprise (SCTIE). “This is a great opportunity to witness the Sardine Run up close, while also taking some time to explore the diverse outdoor, cultural, retail, sports, and family fun activities the KZN South Coast has to offer.”

Weekly/Monthly Events on the KZN South Coast

Sweetdale Night Market
Where: Serenity Hills
When: Last Friday of the month
Time: 6pm to 10pm
Details: Enjoy a relaxed evening with great music, awesome craft and food stalls, a special vibe, and more. Bring your friends and family (there are kids’ activities) and pets!

The Lions Night Market
Where: Port Shepstone Country Club
When: First Friday of the month
Time: 5pm to 9pm
Details: Enjoy local crafts, food, drink, and live musicians with a secure and magical ambience.

Rotary’s Uvongo Flea Market
Where: Uvongo Opposite Douglas Mitchell Sports Grounds
When: Every Saturday and Sunday Morning
Time: Saturday 8.30am to 1pm | Sunday 9am to 2pm
Details: Delicious food, clothing, arts & crafts, plants, music, jumping castle, and licenced pub.

Sardine Run Festival Events

Old School Music Extravaganza
Where: Mazubane Lifestyle Centre
When: Friday, 31 May – Sunday, 2 June
Details: Vumezitha Fuze Sound & Events presents the ‘Old School Music Extravaganza’ with a great line-up to be announced. This includes Old School Kwaito and Amapiano (31 May), Jazz and Soul (1 June), and a picnic (2 June). Refreshments are sold at the venue. Thulokuhle Butchery & Restaurant is open on site.
Cost: The picnic is free. Early Bird Entrance for Friday and Saturday is R50 (per day) from Computicket, House&Home, Shoprite, Checkers

Ocean Festival
Where: Scottburgh
When: Thursday, 6 to Monday, 9 June.
Details: Celebrate World Ocean Day (8 June) this year with clean-ups, water sports, live music, entertainment and so much more at Scottburgh’s Ocean Festival. Embracing this year’s World Ocean Day theme Catalyzing Action for Our Ocean & Climate, the event will include live music and entertainment, a film screening, artwork, river/ocean/reef clean-ups, the Aliwal Shoal Surfski Challenge, Ocean Carnival Lifesaving, Made for More adaptive surf therapy session, and lots more!

The Sardine Extravaganza
Where: KZN South Coast Beaches
When: 14 June to 7 July 2024
Time: 10am to 2pm
Details: Get ready for an adrenaline-pumping experience of fun family activities taking place at activations across the KZN South Coast beaches this holiday. Beachgoers are kept entertained with an action-packed line-up of activities suited to all ages including beach volleyball and soccer, kids’ entertainment, great competitions and prize giveaways. Head to the KZN South Coast beaches this winter!

The Tuna Bonanza
Where: Shelly Beach Ski Boat Club
When: Thursday, 27 to Saturday 29 June 2024
Time: 6am until late
Details: Fishing starts at 6am or first light with the weigh-in of the fish caught at Shelly Beach from 4pm to 5pm on Thursday and Friday, and 2pm to 3pm on Saturday. Prize giving will start at 6pm on Saturday.

7th Annual Umdoni Classic
Where: Umdoni Park Golf Club
When: Friday, 12 to Sunday, 14 July 2024
Time: 7am start (varying times)
Details: Don’t miss this great golf competition at the stunning Umdoni Park Golf Club with sea views and hectares of indigenous coastal forest.

Umgubho Wezintombi(The Maidens Ceremony)
Where: KwaNyuswa
When: Saturday, 13 July 2024
Time: 8am to 4pm|
Details: This is an annual Zulu event where girls from Ugu District participate in the traditional dance of the maidens to celebrate their purity. The maidens then form part of the famous annual Royal Reed Dance Festival (umkhosi womhlanga) at KwaNongoma.

The Lake Eland Classic
Where: Lake Eland Game Reserve
When: Saturday, 24 to Sunday, 25 August 2024
Details: A fun-filled weekend on Foot and Bicycle. Come and enjoy the bush with all its splendour and amusing wildlife.

Time: 6am for 42.2 km & 21.1km | 7am for 10km & 5 km
Details: The race attracts many athletes, both locally and from out of the area, because of the scenic coastal route which showcases the area’s natural beauty.

Annual Ugu Maskandi Festival.

About KZN South Coast

Known as the ‘Paradise of the Zulu Kingdom, the KZN South Coast stretches 120 kilometres from Scottburgh to Port Edward and inland to Harding.
