COEUR PRESSNORTH IDAHO NEWS NETWORK Sunday April 10 1994 C7 Sports 7 I lb $9 fog zf i i1 IPS 4 I '5 7 'W AP photo Tom Lehman celebrates his Cinderella success at the Masters Saturday Quadruple bogey dooms Beck By The Associated Press Chip Beck was in the chase until he came to the 155 yard par 3 No 12 on Saturday thought I could do anything on he said The thing he did spoiled an otherwise solid round He took a quadruple bogey 7 on his way to a 75 217 that left him eight shots off Tom lead after three rounds Beck said the tricky wind made club selection difficult He decided to use a 7 iron wanting a low trajectory Instead he lofted it too much It got caught in the wind hit the green and jumped into Raes Creek After taking he drop he did the same thing LUKE Continued from Page Cl He came here steeled by that second British Open win by a heart rending second place finish in the PGA Championship and just after a seam less performance in the TPC And he seemed every bit as good as his word when he escaped the early round troubles that had dogged him here in the past Now he is down to one chance to deliver playing well enough I just hope the golf course plays the same tomorrow that the wind blows a little bit and keeps the greens hard the harder it Norman added better it is for me I can go out make a couple of birdies early and who knows what will happen on the back The Masters is annual rite of spring its site of renewal But too many times now it has held little else but disappointment for Norman MASTERS NOTEBOOK inally he got down with a tap in putt after his 12 footer for triple bogey stopped at the edge of the cup too bad that one shot cost me so Beck said playing really really well I really In the money: Prize money for the 1994 Masters increased by $300000 over last year to a total purse of $2 million The purse was released by the Augusta National Golf Club winner will claim a first place prize of $360000 a $54000 increase over last year Second place money went from $183600 to As happy as his first one was is how unhappy nearly each one since has been In 1981 before he was the Shark before he was a global business enterprise before he raised expectations to a level that only his income has so far matched he came here as a raw muscular 26 year old awed by the surroundings Everything about the place felt right beginning with the way the golf course was set up down to the bags of brand new balata balls they handed him to smack out on the practice range And all this happened before he grabbed a share of the first round lead with a 69 went on to finish a surprisingly strong fourth and gave birth to his alter ego the Great White Shark by reveal ing in the interview room his passion for hunting the predator Now 13 years later that inaugural Masters tour stands out as both a blessing and a curse It made him a rich man to be sure but likely it also made him a haunted one In 1986 he finished second as Jack Nicklaus staged one of the most $216000 and third place from $115600 to $136000 Ten words from Daly: John Daly finally broke his silence at the Masters The long hitting 1991 PGA champion had stormed away from Augusta National following each of the first two rounds refusing to talk to the media After turning in his poorest round so far a 77 he stopped long enough to say: would be wise for me not to say Daly and Ian Woosnam of Wales were paired for the third day in a row and each completed 54 holes with identical scores 76 73 77 226 They will be paired again in the final round today stirring comebacks in the history of golf A year later he stood just as close to Larry Mize the Augusta native who slipped into the green jacket after slipping Norman in a playoff by running in a 140 foot pitch like the several other victories snatched from his grasp Norman was as gracious in defeat as a man so often teased by fate could have been It won him another contingent of fans to add to those wowed by his looks and his slashing golf game Yet a third wave joined in with his courageous showings in the last two major championships of last year This did not go unnoticed by either Norman or the marketing arm on his empire But the fact remains that when you sell every thing and win only a few things people will only buy you for so long Norman is already 39 an age at which only one golfer Ben Hogan began col lectingmajor championships in any quantity His time is running out And unless he does something about it his sales will start drying up as well PAYNE Continued from Page Cl Geese and ducks are busy building nests on tiny islands and secluded tufts of marsh grass and a muskrat is already slicing tender plant shoots for next win forage Overhead a red tailed hawk spots a mouse on the lodge as it glides on uplifting air currents As the bird swoops low a resounding of a tail alerts the whole community and panic reigns for a moment Nfany animals visit the marsh but not all of them prefer that environment as a perma nent home Dozens of frog vari eties live oh the sedge like edges and turtles sun themselves on logs or exposed rocks Sandpipers run along the oozing shorelines in search of mosquito larvael slow dragon flies or other insects But most are not content to live here simply a harsh place to find all the neces sities each species requires and the acidic like stained water is not always to their liking except for the mosquitoes! In deeper more exposed areas though the water is clean er less stained and often con tains a variety of fish Bass and perch tolerate some discomfort and generally grow very well in the forage rich water Also in open water elegant water lilies with white or yellow blos soms thrive Merely turn over a lily pad to see the underside of a one story apartment of aquatic life Water mites snail eggs damsel fly eggs and maybe a dozen more insect creatures and under every lily pad Generally due to the dark bottom Color the water is much warmer than large lakes thus coupled with the never ending food supply are able to grow to respectable size in good time Because of the water supply and the abundance of plants and animals for food the marsh is always visited by hungry crea tures from the uplands An incredible hunter the raccoon hunts in the shallows for small fish crayfish and the Jiealthy frog population He slips up on his prey then in one quick motion flicks his lunch into his mouth with a single paw Once certain no escape he often removes the catch and washes it in small shoreline pools Raccoons also dig up whole batches of turtle eggs in sandy areas and raid duck nests to suck the insides from eggs Here and there along the marsh edge people find holes dug in dry sand and littered with fragments of leathery eggshells Good chances are a feisty skunk has found a treasure trove Skunks will spend days searching for eggs and when they detect the scent in the sand beneath them egg history for that nest Actually in this respect the skunk serves a use ful purpose by maintaining a rea sonable balance in turtle num bers throughout the marsh All day long predatory birds circle the Blackrock Marsh An' osprey lands briefly on the shore only to pick up a perch dozing in shallow water rom high overhead ospreys can detect even a subtle fish move ment in discolored water Suddenly with amazing speed the osprey dives into the water seizing the fish with both talons Strong wings lift the bird quick ly and it returns to its nest with prey The marsh has served yet another purpose The marsh is a complex' maze of decomposers the fungi and bacteria that live by decom posing dead animal and plant life Making the thick mud like marsh bottom from all manner of former life Without these decomposers the marsh simply wouldn exist bince it always wet humid and warm always working In some regions of the country even here at Blackrock one can dig a hole in the soft lay ers of marsh mud When a light ed match is held near the hole it quickly goes out but a pale blue flame may continue to burn and flicker for a few seconds Marsh gas or methane feeds the flame Methane is a by product of the millions of microscopic fungi doing their decomposing work beneath the surface interesting to note most forms of life exist at Blackrock 'X simply because of other forms And the careful balance nature has created here ensures a future as long as the marsh exists In time even the smallest pools and watery channels will fill in decompose and become a nutri ent rich field to offer yet another challenge for life In the pattern of captivating realm then life in one form or another is served by death Just as the cunning skills of the coyote allow him to approach a nest undetected then kill the duck for food the coyote serves a pur pose The unattended nest of eggs feeds other species which feed other species inally forms of life at Blackrock Marsh have devel oped over many lifetimes yet man can destroy them in min utes important that we real ize the value of the marsh the uniqueness of the creatures that live there or visit an inter esting adventure to travel along the Coeur River near Killarney Lake a crude road from Highway 3 best traveled on foot along the eastern side of the marsh If you go take a cam era rubber boots binoculars and a big lunch need it to relish all the values of just one day at Blackrock Marsh A Steven Payne of Post alls is a nationally recognized out doors writer photographer and broadcaster His opinions are his own MASTERS Continued from Page C1 The putt on 16 could easily have been a three putt Once again Augusta National played tough as the hard greens failed to hold shots and the slick undulat ing greens made putting a nerve wracking adventure has made that putt and McCumber has made that putt I saw them on Lehman said of the 50 footer just had a positive thought People have made this putt I can Olazabal the 28 year old Spaniard who started as a pro so young itseexpsjike been around forever is positioned well to win his first major champi onship feel fine about he said about being a stroke back have to do what I did today get out on the golf course and enjoy the It was a long day for Norman who seemed in good postion to win his first Masters He made no birdies and three bogeys Lehman who played on the tour from 1983 85 but quit after never winning more than $20000 birdied No 2 and No 7 and turned the front nine in 2 under par 34 He bogeyed No 12 but then birdied three of the next four holes Olazabal eagled the 535 yard 8th hole hitting his second shot within 5 feet of the hole and turned the front nine in 33 He took the lead at 7 under parwhen he birdied No 11 but gave it back with a boegy on the par 5 13th hole when he hit into the water ED BECK AGENT 412 Mullan Post alls ID Phone: 773 7537 SPORTS
